In just three months, the team went from Squarespace to a custom-built platform that would have cost (and was quoted at) over $35,000.

March 2025: The Squarespace Start: Like many busy founders, the team started with the path of least resistance. Squarespace gave us a professional presence quickly, but we hit limitations almost immediately.

April 2025: Webflow Graduation: Webflow offered more control and design flexibility, but we were still confined by platform limitations. The moment we needed server-side analytics tracking (essential for complete user behavior data) we knew they'd outgrown template-based solutions entirely.

June 2025: The AI-Assisted Breakthrough: This is where everything changed. Instead of hiring an independent agency or development team, we partnered with AI to build exactly what we envisioned. Using tools like Cursor IDE for development, Claude Code as our "always there" side-kick, and various AI tools for code generation, review and deployment, we built a custom platform that, frankly, still surprises us.

The result? A website that loads faster, tracks better, and converts higher than solutions costing 100x more to develop.

What "AI-Native" Actually Means

This is more than just using AI to help code. Here's the full scope of what we used and why it was beneficial:

  • Cursor IDE: Despite all the negative press the team behind Cursor is receiving as of late (and disagreement with the new pricing) it remains the best AI-native IDE tested. The ability to use AI in a conversational setting is a game changer. NOTE: Amazon's new Kiro IDE may be a Cursor replacement, once the bugs are worked out.
  • Claude Code: This is one of the most powerful AI tools used, and Anthropic proves themselves yet again as to why they are the leading AI lab when it comes to software development. Living directly in the terminal, it seriously lacks all the pretty UI components, but that's what makes it valuable: the straight to the point, no-nonsense approach made it the "always on" resource, and allowed staying within the development environment without having to jump into a browser or app to engage with Claude. Game changer.
  • Claude-4-Sonnet: This is the primary model used to write the code. No other models tested come close to the performance, accuracy and speed of Claude.
  • ChatGPT o3: Great at debugging and "keeping Claude honest".
  • ChatGPT Codex: Not used extensively, but this new tool from OpenAI integrated directly into Github can be another strong tool to help the overall development experience.

Now, here's where Neural Partners' approach fundamentally differs. While many agencies and businesses are still figuring out how to add AI to their existing processes, we rebuilt our entire digital infrastructure with AI integrated from day one.

The experience created even more appreciation for all of the skilled developers, engineers and architects we have worked with over the years because even using the best AI systems available right now, nothing can replace the human skills required to make all of this come together. Not having these skills made it challenging and even led to complete rewrites of parts of the codebase. But we'll chalk it up as a learning experience that will improve future iterations.

  • ALWAYS be detailed and specific: When asking AI to execute tasks with agency. Never, ever, ever ask it to simply "clean up the back-end" because it will literally "clean up everything" to satisfy your request. This was learned the hard way.
  • Use multiple models: Use different models for various tasks. ChatGPT o3 proved great at tasks that require a large context window. Claude 4 Sonnet is the best for daily use and task execution. Gemini 2.5 Pro was also used as a fall-back. Reason or Thinking modes work well, but use them sparingly to avoid going over budget.
  • Act like a Product Manager: Not an executive. Clearly define the goals of the task, the acceptance criteria, the trade-offs you are willing to take, and the expected outcomes. Well defined requirements go a long way. The "do this because I say so" method does not work well in this (or any) use case.
